Luke James shares the music that soundtracks his life during an episode of VIBE‘s Set A Vibe digital series. The on-screen talent dug deep into his roots to detail the music and artists that shaped his outlook on life and art during an impromptu playlist session.
The New Orleans native revealed his groundings in classic soul and R&B, a clear influence heard in his own solo tracks.
“Song number one I’d say… ‘Heard It Through The Grapevine’ by Marvin Gaye, Marvin Gaye’s version,” detailed the actor. “My earliest memories of hearing music I think of The California Raisins… I can think of my record player my mom had for me and the vinyl, and the cover with The California Raisins on it, and Marvin Gaye’s name. That’s my earliest memory of music resonating with me.”
He continued to add nostalgic R&B songs into the mix.
“Hmm… Three would probably be Silk ‘Freak Me,'” he shares through laughter. “It’s a memory that I have being in camp, watching all of the staff members… they were listening to this music and they were moving and dancing and grinding to this music… The song is such a hit and it just moved me. I wanted to sing it, too. I know how it got people going. That’s something that stays with me… Imagine a 10-year-old trying to sing that.”
In a separate clip, James also discussed his starring role in Prime Studio’s Them: The Scare, a horror anthology series that he describes as “top-tier television” that’s “beautifully done.”
